Flute Lessons

Whether you are a beginner or beginning again or an advanced flautist, I believe to be trained using classical methods may lead to an expertise in knowing the instrument, your body and how to play to your best. Some of theses techniques can include:

  • Tone - breathing, posture, embouchure, intonation and vibrato. These can be learned in small ways in whatever piece you are currently playing or, for the more serious flautist, with more intense detailed exercises.

  • Finger technique - efficient practice methods that cover finger technique for fast passages and ornamentation. This is something that flautists often face and are just expected to be able to do. There are specific techniques to learn how to do this, and I learned it much later in life from my teacher, Sabine Ducrot, who was a student of Jean-Pierre Rampal. These methods stayed with me and I apply them still to every piece I’m currently working on.

  • Repertoire & Genres  - from baroque to modern, including film music, pop, improvisation and composition. What I feel is sometimes forgotten later on in the learning process is to have the courage to move on and explore other types of music, with or without notation. This is a point where a lot of people have difficultly agreeing to try out, but later on only want to play :)

  • Musicality - understanding phrasing and structures in music, then adding your own personal interpretation and style to this, seeing how we can bring that to life through you.

  • Instrument - choosing the right instrument for you.

  • Performance coaching - managing anxiety, developing your presence as you play, building stage confidence.
