When I look back, I realise how much I’ve been through with music. From growing up in the orchestras at home, to studying and performing as a soloist, playing in so many diverse ensembles with so many different types of people, to dealing with performance anxiety, self-doubt and, with the Cello, simply an enormous will to master it, along with a constant nagging feeling that I started much later than I “should” have. There are so many things music has taught me about myself and life.
On beginning my studies, on our very first day, my lecturer - Dr. Geoffrey Spratt - opened by saying: “Music, well you start here, there is your first point.” (and he showed it by pointing his finger in the air) “We start and we never finish, there is no end point, it’s a constant journey of inner and outer joys and frustrations and if we can remember this, our journey of learning becomes somehow much lighter”. I never forgot this.
A few years ago, after some injuries from playing just a little too much and not listening to my body, I decided to take a break and focus on my students and practicing for myself. This was a very important few years for me. Everything became calmer and I began to listen closer to my students playing. I listened to myself too, even closer, something I never really did fully until then. Recently, the feeling of wanting to play again for people felt right, but I wanted something different this time and didn’t know what, until my I joined my local yoga studio and found myself learning how vibrations and sequences affect us on a very basic level.
So I began playing and composing my own music for cello for yoga classes. Through this, I felt the urge to begin to experiment with electronic music, pedals, effects, looping and so on. Something, I confess, I am still slightly lost in and have a lot more to learn.
This then lead me to playing and composing music for cello over all types of electronic music. I am currently preparing a programme for Cello to play for the launch of a book. The music is based around music from Yann Tiersan.
